| Brian Luke Seaward, a nationally renowned expert in the field of stress management and mind-body-spirit healing is one of the many inspiring speakers who will present at the 2011 People's Convention hosted by Unity Worldwide Ministries June 13–17, 2011, in Overland Park, Kansas. Seaward will present “Health of the Human Spirit,” highlighting the relationship between stress and human spirituality, and how to come to terms with the obstacles, roadblocks and distractions one encounters along a spiritual path. “My presentation is based on ageless wisdom for changing times,” Seaward says. “In this ever-changing world filled with a plethora of distractions and stress, the voice of ageless wisdom is drowned out and forgotten. My hope is that people will be able to not only absorb this ageless wisdom, but take steps to integrate it into their lives.” Roadblocks and obstacles, he says, are best described as any stressor that is left unresolved. “Avoidance is the number one coping technique for stress,” Seaward notes, “and perhaps to no surprise, it is also the number one ineffective coping technique.” Rather than using avoidance, Seaward recommends trying to identify our roadblocks and obstructions, such as an unpleasant boss or financial stress, for example. Next, he encourages people to tap into the emotions associated with these barriers, which are often anger or fear. “Roadblocks are dismantled with the use of one's muscles of the soul—our inner resources—such as forgiveness, patience, optimism or compassion,” he explains. “Ultimately, the biggest roadblock on the spiritual path is the ego.” Seaward has written several best-selling books including Managing Stress: A Creative Journal, Flow Like Water: Reflections on Stress and Human Spirituality and The Art of Calm. Each demonstrates that when stressed, anger and fear can choke the human spirit. "Stress is an opportunity for spiritual growth, if we take the time to learn from our experiences,” says Seaward. “An ancient Chinese proverb states that to bring peace into the world, one must first bring peace into one's heart. Therefore, by calming our minds and opening our hearts in times of stress, we can tap into the health of the human spirit in body, mind and soul.” |
