Love—The Harmonizing Power of the Universe
By Gail Dobert

Charles Fillmore, co-founder of Unity, identified 12 spiritual abilities perfectly expressed by Jesus, which are also present in each one of us. Fillmore called them the Twelve Powers. Unity is designating 2010 “The Year of the Twelve Powers.” This article is one of the many inspirational materials featured this month as part of our Twelve Powers Resource Center.
What is the first thing you think about when you hear the word love? Instinctively, I think of my family—my husband and children, my siblings and parents. Then I think of my friends who are with me in good times and bad. And I have to smile when I think of my little dog and all the joy she brings me. I love my home, my job … my life is full of love!
From a spiritual perspective, the Power of Love is the harmonizing power of the Universe. Love feels really good, and it is a deep human need. But what happens when someone you love leaves your life? Where is love when seemingly bad things happen?
The highest form of Love requires us to move beyond “human love”—the kind that can be tossed about by emotions and events. Rather the Power of Love allows us to rest in the endless and changeless Love of God that is always within us.
Love and Wisdom are two Powers that are forever intertwined. When we see Love as our Christ nature and align it with the power of Wisdom, we are able to discern what is ours to do and what is not ours to do. We can “love” or focus on what will lead us to be the best Christ we can be.
Being loved and loving others is central to our lives. And loving others does not necessarily mean accepting all behaviors or conditions. As we become steadfast in the Power of Love inside, we can rest in knowing that regardless of the conditions and circumstances in our lives—only Love prevails.
