This month as Unity celebrates the Twelve Powers, we are learning about the Power of Strength. True strength is within each of us. It allows us to overcome outer appearances and be steadfast in our power of Faith.
The disciple of Strength is Andrew. The Greek meaning of Andrew is “strong man.” Spiritual strength holds our Faith and our love in place. The Powers work together to enhance our spiritual growth.
The word strength may conjure an image of someone who is physically strong. We may see in our mind's eye a strong man that is able to carry someone out of a burning building. Or we may think of someone who is strong-willed or strong-minded.
My mother always said I was as stubborn as a mule when I was a child. Vying for what I wanted got me what I wanted most of the time though, so I didn't feel insulted by her comment at all.
As I matured and then had my own children, I got to experience this same stubbornness again—in myself and in my children. In using the Twelve Powers, I have learned that I can use my inner strength to do much more than get my own way. I can use my strength not only for my own good, but also the higher good of my family and the greater community.
Living by Truth principles takes Strength. It takes persistence to see everything through the eyes of Truth.
Have I mastered this inner Strength? Certainly not. Using the Twelve Powers and all spiritual tools is a lifelong process. The most important part of that process, in my opinion, is being open to the wonders of life that go beyond, but also include, our own personalities.
God is within each of us. The Twelve Powers are dynamic tools that help remind us about the Truth of who we are. This month I encourage you to explore the ways in which you use Strength in your life. You might be surprised at how strong you really are.
