Other convention events include a Unity Kid's Spirit Camp for children ages 4-11 and a spiritual social action distribution trip for Shoes4Unity.
Spiritual Social Action
Shoes4Unity was launched by the Spiritual Social Action Team of the Association. The program is a partnership with Soles4Souls Inc., which works to help an estimated 300 million children worldwide who have no shoes. The not-for-profit organization was founded by footwear company executive Wayne Elsey, who was struck by an image of a shoe washing up on the beach following the devastating tsunami in Southeast Asia in 2004. Since its inception, the organization has distributed more than 4 million pairs of shoes to people in 125 countries.
The Association's goal is to sponsor or gather 525,600 pairs of shoes by the end of 2010—that's the equivalent of one pair of shoes and one life changed for every minute in a year.
Honorary Awards at Convention
Several special honorary awards will be presented at the Convention. Dr. Michael Bernard Beckwith and Rickie Byars Beckwith will receive the Light of God Expressing in Society Award. This award is given to people whose contributions have benefited humankind and enhanced the spiritual quality of life through teaching, speaking, leadership, service, human relations, media and the arts.
Joann Landreth, director of Ministry Employment Services for the Association will receive the Light of God Expressing in Unity Award. This award is given to people who have made significant and lasting contributions to the Unity movement through healing, teaching, speaking, writing, leadership, organization, human relations or the arts.
Carl Osier, Association vice president of Minister and Ministry Services, will receive this year's Charles Fillmore Award for demonstrating dynamic leadership, pioneering innovative programs, and holding a visionary consciousness. The Myrtle Fillmore Award will be presented to Lynne Brown, vice president of Silent Unity, for demonstrating service through a consciousness of prayer.
“Join us in Circles of Divine Love, as we bring our entire movement together for a new and exciting future,” says James Trapp, president and chief executive officer of the Association. “I'm always inspired and energized by our time together. There are great things afoot for our beloved Unity movement, and I look forward to the opportunity we all have to spiritually reconnect with our Unity family.”
