ASSAGE: "Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 1:18 RSV).

COMMENT: Sorry I missed your deadline—this is a busy time of year, as I'm sure you know. The question of the Virgin Birth is a thorny one for many people in Unity. It makes no logical sense, but it is strong in our collective consciousness, which tells us that there is an important truth expressing through the image.

Neither Matthew nor Luke was attempting to write an accurate history or biography of Jesus. Neither had any way of knowing the details of Jesus' birth—Luke never met the man, and Matthew didn't encounter him until he was 30. Both were using scriptural and mythological images to convey the idea that this was a man born with a great religious destiny. We can believe what we choose about the historic details. What's important is the metaphysical truth that the birth of Christ Awareness—the realization of our own Oneness with the Presence and Power of God—does not happen through the logic of our minds or the reports of our senses. It is a “virgin” birth in that it comes exclusively from an inner knowing—directly from the divine, not filtered through the human experience.

Blessings!
