Inaugurated in 1998, the Season for Nonviolence was established to honor the 50th and 30th memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

On January 30, 1998, International Youth of Unity officers made a presentation to the United Nations during the Season for Nonviolence. Along with their presentation, they also submitted a list of daily commitments to live by.
