What is the purpose of the licensed Unity teacher program?
Who licenses Licensed Unity Teachers?
Education and licensing of Unity teachers is a joint venture between Unity Institute and The Association of Unity Churches International (AUCI). Candidates will be working with Unity Institute, SEE Department, as they complete the required courses. They will be working with AUCI as they complete the Practicum and Skills Demonstration Seminar. The Board of Trustees of the AUCI approves licensing for each candidate.
Is the Spiritual Education and Enrichment Program (SEE) part of the educational process for candidates for licensed Unity teachers?
Yes. Candidates for licensed Unity teachers must successfully complete all of the required courses offered in the Spiritual Development Program as well as all of the required Leadership courses. The Practicum, which is completed in your ministry, is completed during the same time frame that you are completing the Leadership courses. You will begin the Practicum after successfully completing the psychological evaluation.
Will my minister be involved in my training?
The role of the sponsoring minister is to be a mentor for the licensed teacher candidate as well as an evaluator of the candidate's teaching skills, interaction with the congregation and readiness for a leadership position in a Unity church. The sponsoring minister continues in this role even after the candidate is licensed. The licensed Unity teacher serves the Unity ministry in accordance with the mission and vision of the Unity church and at the direction of the minister. The sponsoring minister must be an ordained or licensed Unity minister or a qualified and approved Unity spiritual leader.
How do I apply?
When you have completed 250 credits of Spiritual Development classes, meet with your minister to determine your Focus Area and then send a Letter of Intent to the AUCI's Licensed Teacher Coordinator. The Letter of Intent should include the following:
1. Candidte's name, home address, phone numbers, e-mail address
2. Number of Spiritual Development hours completed
3. The month and year you plan to begin attending Leadership classes
4. Your chosen Focus Area (see the Licensing for Teachers booklet)
5. Name of your sponsoring ministry and minister including your minister's e-mail address
6. Your sponsoring minister's signature, confirming their willingness to be your sponsor
After receipt of your Letter of Intent, the Licensed Teacher Coordinator will contact you for scheduling of your psychological evaluation and provide further information and details of the application process.
What is a Focus Area?
You may be licensed in one of four focus areas: Adult Education, Administration, Pastoral Care or Youth and Family Ministry, depending on your interests, the agreement you have made with your sponsoring minister, and the needs of your ministry.
