Be The Change

Unity Churches International EarthCare Team

The purpose of the Unity Churches International EarthCare (UCIE) Team is to support the Association of Unity Churches International in fostering the awareness of our spiritual oneness with our Earth home and to promote active care of creation.

UCIE rose up from the grassroots of the Unity movement, coming from the deep desire to express Unity's belief in our oneness with all divine life in ways that directly impact for our planet home. As in so many areas in Unity, we saw the importance of walking the talk. Our vision statement reads, "All humanity lives in a spiritual consciousness that manifests as loving coexistence with all creation and care for our Earth home." Click here to read a brief history of Unity EarthCare.

We act so that every step on our planet home and through our life here is an active prayer for all divine creation.

Our EarthCare Congregation Program is featured in the Thriving in Unity 1.0 program as Benchmark 11 and in the Thriving in Unity 2.0 program in Benchmark 8. We are happy to assist you with either of these actions.

Please contact us at earthcare@unity.org for assistance with starting EarthCare activities in your center, with completing the Thriving in Unity programs, or with becoming a working member of the international Team. We can also connect you with regular mentoring conference calls for support.

Joy in Food
I have served tasty vegan cookies, cakes and pies (and even vegan ice cream!) at staff lunches, Sunday morning coffee hours and some other events at the Unity church I attend, and these items have been very popular. People have learned how good vegan food can be and have often opted for the vegan choice when both vegan and non-vegan items have been served! As with any endeavor with food, using the best recipes and brands is key. Amazon.com and Borders have a good selection of vegan cookbooks (topnotch examples are Veganomicon and other cookbooks by Isa Chandra Moskowitz), and Amazon.com and many health food stores such as Whole Foods Market have a good selection of vegan prepared foods you can purchase (try Uncle Eddie?s vegan chocolate chip cookies, for example). The Vegetarian Resource Group (vrg.org) can help you find vegan items in your area. Dining and snacking on vegan food is a highly enjoyable way to take action for our planet! Gretchen Chlebowski

Is there an environmental elephant in the room?
When we are making our lists for Earthcare programs, why are we silent on the recent declaration by the United Nations regarding how we might best impact care for our earth? Specifically: n a 2006 report entitled Livestock's Long Shadow, the United Nations condemned animal agriculture as "one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global," stating that raising animals for food contributes more to global climate change than all of the cars, trucks, ships, planes and other forms of transportation combined. In June 2010, the United Nations declared that a global shift toward a vegan diet is vital to save the world from the most devastating impacts of climate change. Two years earlier, the Pew Charitable Trust's report, Putting Meat on The Table: Industrial Farm Animal Production in America, found that industrial animal agriculture "is not sustainable and presents an unacceptable level of risk to public health and damage to the environment, as well as unnecessary harm to the animals we raise for food." I know this gets into personal lifestyles, but it could also affect a church's potlucks, what a church is willing to buy for food for its congregation, etc.
